Ajani Neighbourhood House is feeling the impact of community kindness, thanks to Grill’d Doncaster’s Local Matters program, which has contributed $300 to support the centre’s Food Relief Pantry.
Every dollar will go directly towards restocking pantry shelves with essential, culturally appropriate food items for local families doing it tough. From basmati rice, lentils and chickpeas to long-life milk, passata and tinned goods, these staples form the backbone of weekly support for people across Manningham.
Over the past 18 months, Ajani has witnessed a significant rise in demand for food relief. Client visits to the pantry have increased by 68%, reflecting the growing cost-of-living pressures faced by the community. In 2023, the pantry supported an average of 78 clients each month, distributing around 809kg of food. By mid-2024, that figure had grown to 131 clients per month, with more than 1,120kg of food being distributed.
Despite this growth, resources haven’t always kept pace. Pantry supplies have only increased by 38%, highlighting the ongoing challenge of meeting rising demand. This is why initiatives like Grill’d Local Matters are so important—they help bridge the gap and ensure support can continue where it’s needed most.
The pantry primarily supports local residents, with all but two clients living within Manningham. Many come from vulnerable backgrounds, including 63% from culturally and linguistically diverse communities and 6% First Nations clients. The majority of pantry users are women, and more than a third rely on the service weekly.
Behind the scenes, the pantry is powered entirely by volunteers—dedicated locals who give their time to sort, pack and distribute food, alongside students completing placements in community services. Ajani also works closely with partners like CareNet and Viva La Fruit to provide fresh produce, ensuring clients receive not only pantry staples but also nutritious, wholesome food.
This contribution from Grill’d is more than a donation—it’s a reminder of what can be achieved when businesses and communities come together. It’s about neighbours supporting neighbours, and ensuring that no one in the community goes without.
Ajani Neighbourhood House extends its sincere thanks to Grill’d for helping to make a meaningful difference in the lives of so many.
